Business disputes, settled sooner and for less

I'm Morgan Sample, a commercial lawyer and nationally accredited mediator. Owners bring me fallouts with partners, suppliers, customers and landlords, and most leave with a deal rather than a court date.

  • Fixed-fee document review in five business days
  • Mediation in Brisbane, on the coasts or online

Disputes I handle

For owners of businesses with up to about 50 staff. Every matter starts with a fixed-fee review of the documents.

  • Contract disputes

A supplier, customer or contractor hasn't done what the contract says, or says you haven't.

    $450 review

  • Partners and shareholders

Falling out with a co-owner, buying someone out, or untangling a business that's ending.

    From $2,200

  • Unpaid invoices

Letters of demand, statutory demands and small claims for money you're owed.

    From $390

  • Commercial leases

Rent reviews, make-good claims and disputes with a landlord over repairs or outgoings.

    From $1,200

  • Mediation

I act as the neutral mediator for two businesses that want to settle without lawyers on each side.

    $2,400 half day, shared

  • Responding to a claim

You've received a letter of demand or court papers and need a plan before the deadline.

    $450 review

How a matter runs

Four stages. You'll know the cost of each one before it starts.

  1. Document review

Send me the contract, the emails and the invoices. Within five business days you get a written view of where you stand, for a fixed fee.

  2. A plan and a price

We agree on what you want out of it, and I quote the next stage in writing.

  3. Negotiation or mediation

Most disputes end here, with a signed settlement deed instead of a hearing.

  4. Court, if it comes to that

If the other side won't settle, I run the claim in the Magistrates or District Court, with a quote for each step.

  • My business partner and I hadn't spoken in months. One day of mediation with Morgan and we'd agreed the buyout, the price and the handover.

  • The review told me in plain words that my claim was weaker than I thought. That saved me far more than the fee.

  • A supplier owed us $38,000 for nine months. Morgan's letter got it paid in three weeks.

Questions owners ask

What do I send for the document review?

The contract or agreement, the key emails and any invoices or notices. A folder or a zip file is fine.

Can you be the mediator and also my lawyer?

Not in the same dispute. As mediator I'm neutral and work for both businesses. As your lawyer I work only for you.

Do you charge by the hour?

Reviews and most stages have a fixed fee. Court work is quoted step by step, in writing, before each step starts.

Do you work outside Brisbane?

Yes. Mediations run in Brisbane, on the Gold or Sunshine Coast, or online. Court work is anywhere in Queensland.

What size of business do you work with?

Mostly owner-run businesses with up to about 50 staff. Larger companies usually need a bigger firm.
